Can it really be time to head back to the classroom? Didn’t summer just begin?
Although fall is my favorite time of year, it’s hard to watch the commercials on TV about getting your pencils, paper, markers and glue sticks ready for the coming school year. It’s been a fun summer filled with lots of swimming, picnics and grilling, along with late bedtimes and plenty of ice cream. I suppose it’s time for the routine of the school year.
Back to school also means back to start making lunches.
Let’s start with the main dish: sandwiches. My favorite sandwich bread for sandwich making is our bakery’s cracked wheat. It stays nice and soft in the lunch bag all day and the kids will eat it. It also lasts a few days on the counter before drying out, so I appreciate that.
Next, it’s time to fill that sandwich bread. My family loves the new line of all-natural deli meats from Metro Deli. Their selections are exactly what I’m looking to feed my children – wholesome food, no additives and they taste great. The price point on those is really nice, too, which makes it even easier to make choices I feel good about. Find their 6 selections in our deli departments.
Then it’s down to the lunch sides, which get tricky sometimes if you have picky eaters. You can try applesauce in the to-go containers, apples, grapes, carrots, baked chips or crackers. Some of the veggies may be traded or find a home in the garbage, so make sure your little one actually likes them. String cheese and yogurt are easy to pack and are great at snack time. Yogurt or even hummus and pita chips would keep my kids happy and full for a few hours. Bananas, peaches, strawberries and raspberries are other favorites that let parents feel good about packing and things that kids will actually eat!
Treats in their lunches are an area to use caution. With all the regulations in schools and the growing list of food allergies, our bakeries can help you find appropriate treats and snacks that will meet your school’s requirements. Nut-Free, Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free… we have options for you and your child’s classroom.
Happy Back to school!
