May is International Mediterranean Diet Month, a chance to focus attention on one of the world's healthiest (and most delicious) diets.
In February, 2013, a major clinical trial was published in The New England Journal of Medicine showing a 30 percent risk reduction for heart attacks and strokes with the Mediterranean diet. In April, 2013, a second large scale study was published in Neurology that showed following the Mediterranean Diet was associated with lower risk of memory and cognitive impairment. With new evidence, this topic has been especially hot.

It’s California avocado season! In addition to being highly nutritious, avocados score an A plus for cooking versatility in my book.
Did you know 1/5 of an avocado (or about 2 tbsp.) has only 50 calories? Avocados can be used as a substitute that kicks up flavor, boosts nutrition and saves calories. For example:
- Use in place of mayo on sandwiches (2 tbsp. mayo = 109 calories)
- Spread on a bagel or toast with a little sea salt instead of butter (2 tbsp. butter = 204 calories)
- Add on a burger instead of a slice of cheese (1 slice cheddar cheese = 114 calories)
- Top of a baked potato (2 tbsp. sour cream = 60 calories)

From cereal and crackers to ice cream and juice, there are common misconceptions about the nutritional quality of foods. The fact is, it’s easy to be fooled—even unintentionally—into what we think is better for us to eat. The results, however, are quite clear: obesity and heart disease rates in America continue to skyrocket. A leading contributor to the problem is confusion on how to find better nutrition.
This past fall we launched the NuVal Nutrition Scoring System in all of our Lunds and Byerly’s stores. For those unfamiliar with this system, NuVal gives all foods and drinks a score from 1 to 100 – the higher the score, the higher the nutrition. Nearly 15,000 products throughout our stores have a NuVal score and you’ll find it right on the price tag next to the price. NuVal scores give you the ability to quickly compare the overall nutritional quality of foods at a glance.

I grew up in northern MN where the only fresh produce in winter meant apples, carrots and iceberg lettuce, but our produce department has kept me stocked with watermelon, stone fruits and beautiful berries all winter long!
At Lunds and Byerly’s, you’re able to have quality produce variety throughout the year. And for those months where your favorite items aren’t in season, frozen foods provide a great option for variety.
Frozen foods instead of fresh produce? That can’t be healthy! While it’s true not all frozen foods are healthy for you, frozen produce packed without added sugar, salt and sauces are equally nutritious.

Did you know: an adult’s heart weighs about 10 ounces, beats about 104,000 times per day and pumps 2,000 gallons of blood daily.
We know what our hearts have done for us lately, but what do we do for it?
There aremany ways to care for our hearts, like watching our cholesterol and blood pressure, getting regular exercise, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and limiting saturated fats in our diets.
Another important thing to do is to be sure to get enough omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are called essential fatty acids because our body can’t make them from scratch on our own, so we need to look to our diet or supplements.
