It says it right in our mission: Second Harvest Heartland works to end hunger through community partnerships – and an integral partner in the hunger relief community is Lunds and Byerly’s.
Throughout the year, we rely on the generosity and commitment of many groups and individuals to provide more food to our neighbors in need. Lunds and Byerly’s Reuse and Reward program is a great example of how a large organization and the community can come together to take small steps that make a big impact.
I recently learned the program surpassed the 4 million bag mark…that’s 4 million different times when Lunds and Byerly’s shoppers chose to use their reusable bag and thus trigger a 5-cent donation to Second Harvest Heartland.
While five cents may not seem like much to the average shopper, consider what can be accomplished over years across our communities: more than $200,000 has been donated through their Reuse and Reward program. That’s enough for Second Harvest Heartland to distribute food the equivalent of more than 740,000 meals, which is more than one meal for every person who lives in Minneapolis and St. Paul combined.
The reality is the demand for food is at an all-time high. Our emergency food shelf and meal program partners are experiencing an unprecedented need. But here in the heartland, where there is no shortage of food resources, I’m confident we can continue to break down barriers to access and ultimately connect all of our neighbors with the meals they need to live strong, healthy lives.
We can’t do this alone though. We rely on important partners like Lunds and Byerly’s and its caring shoppers to help sustain Second Harvest Heartland and our work towards a hunger-free Minnesota.
On behalf of Second Harvest Heartland staff and those we serve, thank you.
