Sunday is the biggest snacking day of the year and some reports estimate more than 1.24 billion wings will be eaten and 4.4 million pizzas will be ordered for the big game! It really is the championship of eating events!
I look forward to the big game every year, and I’ll admit it’s usually not because of the game, but the fun atmosphere of an eating event that goes on for hours. Most of us will indulge to some degree, so keep in mind this particular day eating is more of a marathon than a race!
If you’re the one rolling up your sleeves to put on the big feast, plan to have a few things on the menu that lighten up your meal and add in some great nutrition. This is the perfect time to use NuVal Nutritional Scoring System and trade up for higher scoring foods.
Here are some tips for a healthier game day snack table:
Veggie trays – Make the centerpiece of your table a huge colorful veggie tray. Carrots, peppers, cucumbers, celery, pea pods, tomatoes, cauliflower - have a tray heaped with veggies to eat plain or use as a dipper. Hollow out a red pepper and fill with a high scoring hummus dip, like Tribe Roasted Red Pepper(NuVal 46). Lunds and Byerly’s Artichoke Roasted Garlic Dip (NuVal 26) pairs well with a great cracker like Flat Out Multigrain Crisps (NuVal 49) or Triscuits Hint of Salt (NuVal 39).
Healthy dips – What feast is complete without Mexican dip? Lighten the usual recipe with LaPreferida fat free refried beans(NuVal 51), fat free sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, black olives and Wholly Guacamole 100 calorie (NuVal 60). Serve with high scoring chips, like Lunds and Byerly’s Blue Corn and Flax Tortilla Chips (NuVal 46) or make a tortilla wrap with Tumaros Low Carb Multigrain Tortilla (NuVal 74). Serve with Lunds and Byerly’s Black Bean and Corn Salsa (NuVal 62) or Tostitos Restaurant Style Salsa (NuVal 35).
Roll Ups – Start with Flatout Light Original Bread (NuVal 59), spread with fat free Ranch dip, add deli turkey, light cheese, lettuce, tomato and peppers. Roll up and voila – a “traded up” wrap!
Turkey meat – If you usually use ground beef in your Mexican dip or chili, save some fat by substituting ground turkey breast. You won’t notice a difference once the flavors blend!
Shrimp – Shrimp is low in calories and has a NuVal score of 81. Serve with C & B Zesty Shrimp Sauce (NuVal 16).
Don’t forget dessert – have refreshing strawberries or raspberries drizzled with Hershey Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup (NuVal 41). For a candy treat, Hershey Dark Chocolate Nuggets with Almond have a NuVal score of 20.
There are trade ups for many of our favorite snack and meal items. Check our shelf tags for individual product scores and pick-up a NuVal brochure at any Lunds or Byerly’s for the category averages. Enjoy the big game and consider yourself a winner for making healthier choices!
