Wetherby Cranberries

by Colin Lyons, produce buyer
Friday, November 1, 2013

The air has once again turned brisk and I cannot help but to start thinking about Thanksgiving. I know turkey is usually the number one food for most people during this holiday; the annual pilgrimage to the meat department is something I certainly do. Turkey is good, but I am a produce guy, and when I think of Thanksgiving, I think of cranberries!

For more than 20 years, Lunds and Byerly’s has grown a wonderful relationship with the local Wetherby Cranberry Company to bring our customers the finest cranberries in the world. This exclusive item has been a staple on our shelves from harvest time well into winter.

Fall is the bakery’s time to shine! We have such a fantastic variety of apple products and as we dive deeper into the season, we turn to pumpkin!

Did you know that pumpkin is rich in dietary fiber, anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins? It’s a local vegetable grown in many Midwest fields and provides a rich sweet flavor to many of our bakery treats.

It’s my favorite time of year! You can start to feel that crisp fall air, see the leaves changing and smell the season change – be sure to throw an extra blanket on the bed and sleep with the windows open.

This also means apple season is finally here. The apple is hands-down the most popular fruit inclusion in our bakeries. You can’t go wrong with a delicious, juicy apple; its flavor is so complementary to just about anything. Get your taste buds ready for fall with these apple-filled masterpieces.

Bachman’s tips: fabulous fall garden Mums

If your yard is looking a little rough after our sweltering summer, there’s a quick and easy way to infuse your landscape with fabulous fall color: garden mums!

Switch out any wilted, tired annuals with these bright blooms. Start a few new containers to decorate your doorstep, patio and porch for harvest season. Garden mums look fabulous in containers by themselves or mixed with other fall beauties, such as kale and celosia.

Mums come in a wide variety of colors, such as orange, red, yellow and bronze. Mix and match these different shades in your containers for colorful and brilliant blooms throughout the season. Garden mums are located at the outdoor Bachman’s displays at all 22 Lunds and Byerly's stores. Pick up your mums today for festive touch of the season.

Halloween Sweet Treats

I love the fun size candy bars just as much as everyone else, but when it comes to real treats and something that’s actually worth the calories, our bakery is really where you need to go!

Fall is so much fun and I love the flavors of this season, probably because pumpkin is one of my favorites in just about any form - muffins, cupcakes, pie, cake, bars… yum! Check out our Pumpkin Cake Rolls with cream cheese icing. They’re quickly becoming one of our most asked for treats this time of year. Look for them in the cooler at your local store.

Spice cake, Halloween M&M cookies, iced sugar cookies, apple cobblestone bread, pumpkin spice cakes… what do we talk about next? There are so many delicious foods and crafty ideas! I even saw some small tortes in the shape of pumpkins at one of the Lunds stores yesterday. How much fun is that?!
