Hi again! Let me reintroduce myself – I’m Janice Cox, Registered Dietitian with Lunds and Byerly’s.

From cereal and crackers to ice cream and juice, there are common misconceptions about the nutritional quality of foods. The fact is, it’s easy to be fooled—even unintentionally—into what we think is better for us to eat. The results, however, are quite clear: obesity and heart disease rates in America continue to skyrocket. A leading contributor to the problem is confusion on how to find better nutrition.

This past fall we launched the NuVal Nutrition Scoring System in all of our Lunds and Byerly’s stores. For those unfamiliar with this system, NuVal gives all foods and drinks a score from 1 to 100 – the higher the score, the higher the nutrition. Nearly 15,000 products throughout our stores have a NuVal score and you’ll find it right on the price tag next to the price. NuVal scores give you the ability to quickly compare the overall nutritional quality of foods at a glance. 

March is Frozen Food Month!

I grew up in northern MN where the only fresh produce in winter meant apples, carrots and iceberg lettuce, but our produce department has kept me stocked with watermelon, stone fruits and beautiful berries all winter long!

At Lunds and Byerly’s, you’re able to have quality produce variety throughout the year. And for those months where your favorite items aren’t in season, frozen foods provide a great option for variety.

Frozen foods instead of fresh produce? That can’t be healthy! While it’s true not all frozen foods are healthy for you, frozen produce packed without added sugar, salt and sauces are equally nutritious.

Sunday is the biggest snacking day of the year and some reports estimate more than 1.24 billion wings will be eaten and 4.4 million pizzas will be ordered for the big game! It really is the championship of eating events!

 

I look forward to the big game every year, and I’ll admit it’s usually not because of the game, but the fun atmosphere of an eating event that goes on for hours. Most of us will indulge to some degree, so keep in mind this particular day eating is more of a marathon than a race!
