This delicious fall dessert is the perfect way to make apple pie for a crowd.

Apple Pie Squares

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups Flour
1 teaspoon salt
4 ounce shredded Cheddar cheese, (optional)
1 cup vegetable shortening
1 egg yolk, beaten
Milk, to measure 2/3 cup with egg yolk
10 cups thinly sliced, pared apples
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup coarsely crushed corn flakes
1 egg white
Directions
- Combine flour, salt, and shredded cheese into a mixing bowl.
- Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Toss the flour mixture with liquid (such as water or milk) until all the flour is moistened.
- Form the dough into two balls and refrigerate covered.
- Toss apples with sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Roll out one ball of dough to fit the bottom and sides of a 10x15-inch jelly roll pan.
- Sprinkle cereal over the crust.
- Spread the apple mixture over the crust.
- Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the apples.
- Seal the edges of the crust and make slits on top with a knife.
- Beat egg white until stiff and brush it over the crust.
- Bake in a preheated 375°F oven until golden brown, about 1 hour.
- TIPS TO ROLL OUT PASTRY: Shape the ball of dough into a flattened round on a lightly floured cloth-covered board. Roll out with a floured stockinette-covered rolling pin to about 1 inch larger than the inverted pan. To place in the pan, roll the crust around the rolling pin, then unroll it into the pan.
